A House Made of Photographs
For Sumandak Songkial
He tries to peel the photographs of you,
Us, and them, from the sticky yellow backing
Throws them into fire to melt, so that he can mold
And shape you into a thing he wants.
Yet, your photographs stay on your walls, firmly,
Refusing to detach from the past.
Across time, spaces and places, you’ve captured
Moments by moments and building you;
A rebellious daughter, mischievous sister,
A smart, and strong woman—you are funny
A beautiful house made of photographs, of you,
Us, and them—do not let him tear you down
Do not let him change your vibrant colors,
Shuts your firm voice, or locks you in despair.
Keep your doors open so that he can leave
Whenever he wants to—let him choose, let it be.
If he stays, keep a spare key in your pocket all the time,
So that you won’t get locked inside your own house.
If he leaves, I will always be here to help
With the renovations of your heart.
